The butterfly ginger is a large perennial herbaceous plant that grows from underground rhizomes. Its long, upright stems bear dense foliage and terminate in highly fragrant white inflorescences. Despite its name, it is not the ginger used as a spice, although it belongs to the same botanical family, the Zingiberaceae.

A white flower with an intense fragrance

The butterfly ginger (Hedychium coronarium) owes its name to the unique shape of its large white flowers, whose spread petals resemble butterfly wings. Clustered at the top of long stems, they also release an intense fragrance that adds to the ornamental appeal of this tropical plant.

Like the Shell Ginger and the Torch Ginger, the butterfly ginger belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. These plants share a preference for warmth and humidity, but feature very different blooms. In Hedychium coronarium, white flowers appear in succession on a terminal inflorescence, contrasting with long, lance-shaped green leaves.

Native to Asia, the species was introduced as an ornamental plant in many tropical regions around the world. It has notably naturalized in the Caribbean, where humid conditions are particularly favorable for its growth. In Cuba, where it is called mariposa, its flower has even become the national flower.

This great adaptability requires careful attention, however: in Guadeloupe, Hedychium coronarium, also known locally as water cane, is classified as an invasive exotic plant species. Its presence illustrates both the beauty of plants introduced into tropical gardens and the challenges associated with their spread into natural environments.
